Peach Berserk is one of Jeanne Beker’s Top 100 Shops

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

prom dresses torontoI was so honoured for Peach Berserk to be included in Jeanne Beker’s Top 100 Shop’s list. Here’s what she had to say:

“This place is all about fun, whimsical, bright colours and silkscreen prints that just exude personality. Kingi Carpenter, the owner, designs fantastic fabrics and makes really unique dresses, the kind of stuff that will just light up a party. It’s more of that art-to-wear kind of feel, which is always enjoyable. Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Paula Abdul and Portia De Rossi have worn her stuff. Kingi will make a fabric for you with whatever design or image you want on it, but she also runs silkscreen classes in the back of her shop, so you can learn to do it yourself.”

Thanks Jeanne!

Peach Berserk Launches A Fundraising Project in Ottawa, August 17th!

prom dresses torontoPeach Berserk is teaming up with the Ottawa-based charity, CANHAVE (canhave.org), which provides education in a variety of trades to AIDS orphans in Uganda.

Our goal is to travel to Uganda for one week in March 2011 and establish a silk screening cooperative program. Silk screening is an ideal match for the instruction that the students are already receiving in sewing and woodworking.

We will teach students to:
- build their own silk screening equipment
- create and print their own original designs
- produce marketable silkscreened fabrics and finished items
- pass on their new skills to others

While there we will also conduct special workshops in:
- sewing
- pattern-making
- upcycling available materials

We are raising funds for travel and basic silk screening supplies. Our goal is $6,000.

At the Ottawa sale (which is part of the local Cherry Pie event), we are donating 10% of our sales to this goal.

We will also be holding fun draws for silk dresses and silkscreen classes, so don’t miss it!

We have also made limited edition items for sale with special prints celebrating this Ugandan Silkscreen Initiative.

We will be at the Cherry Pie event Tuesday August 17th at The SOMA Spa,  700 Sussex Drive, 6pm – 11pm
Please come out and help Peach Berserk and CANHAVE spread the word!

People Opposed to Cheap Labour Clothes! Please join our group!

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

We gals at Peach Berserk have taken up a very important cause, that concerns the business we are in, making clothes.  We are increasingly horrified with sweatshop labour, and how it exploits poor women in much of the world. prom dress design

I read with interest Naomi Wolf’s article on ‘The High Cost of Cheap”  http://tiny.cc/jcwtr . As the owner of a fashion business, where we produce everything locally, I know what it costs to make clothes where the sewers are paid properly.
And having been in business over 20 years, I am shocked at the widening difference between what my clothes have to cost, and the price of the clothes at the chain stores she talks about.
I personally am horrified by the price of clothes at these places.  The other day, I was considering buying two t-shirts at H and M, that together cost the grand price of $7.  As much as I liked them, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.
I thought that every time I wore them, I would be reminded of what some poor woman was paid to make them.  A woman really no different from the wonderful ones who work for me.
I believe that we Western women should just not buy these underpriced things and use the power of our money to make change for other women.  We can all live with less stuff.  And when (hopefully) things cost more, that will be a small price to pay.

Check out , and if you can join our facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=130839043622679&ref=mf together we can make a difference.

Read Margaret’s amazing story about being creative..the Peach Berserk Way! Thank YOU, Margaret!!xo Kingi

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Hi Kingi,
My daughter, Margaret, and I just need to say THANK-YOU for inspiring us to make her the best grad dress ever! We visited Peach Berserk when we were in Toronto last summer, and Margaret bought one of your fabulous tees.

Margaret shows off her self-made "peachy" style grad dress

She loved it so much that I suggested we could silkscreen fabric for her grad dress (we don’t really say “prom” out west). We ordered your book, read it and watched the DVD a dozen times, as we had never silkscreened before.
Margaret did the design, incorporating some of her favourite things; we silkscreened on a beautiful dark red silk, and then I sewed her dress. We improvised in true Peach Berserk fashion all the way: we made a temporary light table with a $10 used window laid out on my dining room table with the leaves removed. (This way, we were able to use desk lamps to light from below & use the whole screen. We didn’t have any cinder blocks so we used The Complete Works of Shakespeare to weight the screen.)
Margaret had been talking about her dress at school for months, so the pressure was on for this to work! Although there are things I would change with the design, her friends were amazed, and (most important for me) Margaret LOVES her dress and had a wonderful graduation. We screened a tee-shirt for her to wear to the after-grad party.
Thank-you, Kingi! Silk screening really is everything you say it is!

“Hello Kingi and other amazing people at Peach Berserk,

I received my wedding dress today.I have to tell you that I’ve noticed a certain expression on the faces of people when I have mentioned to them that I ordered my wedding dress online solely on the basis of your website, without ever having been in the store or seen your work in person. The set of their face, the look in their eyes says “oh-dear-poor-deluded-woman.” I opened the box slowly, realized I was holding my breath. When I saw that glorious splash of painted roses, my breath burst out as astonishment and laughter. I undressed immediately, zipped up the dress and slipped it carefully over my head. I am beautiful in this dress. It is the me I feel I am inside, magically revealed on the outside. And then the jacket. Oh my, the jacket. I didn’t want to put it on at first. How could anything cover this amazing dress. But I did put it on, and turned to look in the mirror. And somehow the jacket makes the dress even more perfect and beautiful. Then I had to weep for a while. A lot of words to say just this – thank you. I feel the love in the dress.”
